Get to know Hematologist-Oncologist Dr. Isaias Tesfazion, who serves patients throughout the State of Virginia.

As a fellowship-trained hematologist-oncologist, Dr. Tesfazion is affiliated with the following hospitals in Virginia: Reston Hospital Center, Virginia Hospital Center, Inova Fair Oaks Hospital, Inova Fairfax Hospital, and Kaiser Permanente Fair Oaks Medical Center.

His acclaimed career in medicine began after he earned his medical degree from Addis Ababa University Faculty of Medicine in 1980. He then went on to perform his residency in internal medicine and his fellowship in medical oncology at Howard University Hospital in 1992 and 1995, respectively. 

With over forty years of experience in his field, Dr. Tesfazion is board-certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Hematology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study of the cause, prognosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases related to blood. Oncology is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. A hematologist-oncologist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of cancer, malignant blood diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma, and blood disorders such as iron-deficiency anemia, clotting abnormalities, hemophilia, and sickle-cell disease.
